Jewish Heritage Tour No 2

Highlights: Athens – Thessaloniki – Chalkis – Meteora – Veria – Volos

8 days / 7 nights

Day 1

Arrival

Meet and greet and transfer to the Athens city center. We will visit the Archeological site of the Acropolis with Parthenon, we will see the Constitution square, the Temple of Zeus and the Adrian’s Arch and the Olympic Stadium where the first Olympics where held. We will continue with visit to the National Archeological museum. After the end of the tour drive to Chalkida city for dinner and overnight at your hotel.

Day 2

Chalkis Tour

After breakfast, we start our tour. Chalkida is the city where the oldest Jewish community in Greece is registered. Visit the 19th-century synagogue, the cemetery with graves old up to the Ottoman period (16th century). See also the Holocaust monument, view the Euripus bridge before departure straight to Thessaloniki through the valley of Tembi, the second biggest city of Greece.   Possibility of meeting with the members of the local Jewish community at the Jewish Club or walk around the beautiful city squares and cafes in the evening. Dinner in the hotel.

Day 3

Thessaloniki Tour

After breakfast we begin our visit with the two synagogues, the  Synagogue of Monastiriotes and Yad Lezikaron Synagogue where we can have “Arvit” services. We will continue our tour with a visit to the Jewish Museum including guidance inside. See also square of the Jewish Martyrs, and the Holocaust monument located in the New Jewish cemetery. We will have a guided tour including the Archeological museum, the Arc of Galerius, the Market and White Tower before departing for Veria in the afternoon, which lies at the slopes of Mount Vermion with the beautiful landscape. Transfer to your hotel, dinner and overnight.

Day 4

Veria – Kalabaka

Walking tour to the old Jewish district of Barbuta, where many houses have been recently restored. We will visit the Synagogue where Saint Paul preached and the Jewish cemetery situated opposite Barbuta on  the west bank of Tripotamos river. Continue to Kalambaka city, arrival and free time to wander around Kastraki village or Kalabaka city square. Dinner in the hotel.

Day 5

Meteora Tour – Trikala – Volos

Morning visit of Meteora and see the monasteries, which seem to be suspended in mid-air on top of huge granite rocks, where you can see pieces of Byzantine art. After our visit to the beautiful monasteries, depart for Trikala to visit the local synagogue and the pre-war Jewish cemetery. Free time in the local city square for a coffee before departing to Volos. Arrival and transfer to your hotel.

Day 6

Volos Tour

In the morning visit of the Holocaust memorial, in the city of Volos raised by the municipality of Volos in memory of the Jewish citizens who perished during the second World war and the Romaniote Synagogue. Have some free time in the city before departing to Athens. Upon arrival, transfer to your hotel. Dinner and overnight.

Day 7

Athens Tour

In the morning, we will visit the Jewish museum for a guided tour. Then proceed to visit the main synagogue in Athens, the Beth Shalom Sephardic Synagogue and view the Romaniote Synagogue also across the street. They are both located in Thission area, the historical old Jewish quarter. Continue to reach the Lycabettus Hill by taking the cable car up to the top and admiring the beautiful view of Athens. Free time for a coffee. In the afternoon, we will visit the New Acropolis Museum. Rest of the evening free at leisure. Farewell dinner in Athens.

Day 8

Sounio – Departure

After breakfast, free time until check out. We will proceed with a guided tour to the Temple of Poseidon in Cape Sounion passing through on our way the beautiful coastal highway. Spend time to walk in the rocky promontory of Sounion and admire the beautiful sunset. Transfer to the airport for your departure flight.
